Ezetimibe uses Usage, Mechanism of action

The usual dosage involves 10mg once a day with or without food. It can be used in combination with other cholesterol-lowering medicines. Depending on the individual’s response, the dosage frequency and quantity can also be adjusted. It is suggested to follow the doctor’s instruction in case it is given explicitly by the doctor.

This drug works by inhibiting the absorption of cholesterol from the small intestine. This is done by blocking a protein called NPC1L1, which is responsible for extracting cholesterol from the gastrointestinal tract. Once the absorption of cholesterol is reduced, the drug lowers the amount of cholesterol circulating in the blood.

Ezetimibe can be used as a stand-alone drug for patients who cannot tolerate other drug types or when they are sensitive towards the usage of multiple drugs at the same time. It is also used in combination with statins to improve its effectiveness in reducing cholesterol levels. This is helpful in cases when statin alone is not effective.

Like any other drug, ezetimibe also may have side effects depending on the individual. This may include diarrhoea, fatigue, and abdominal pain. In more serious cases, liver problems may also arise, although it’s a rarity. Those sensitive to drugs or with a history of allergies are best advised to consider their options before consuming the drug.

Patients may also need to make changes in their daily routine to help reduce their cholesterol levels further. This usually includes healthy eating habits, regular exercise, and avoiding consumption of alcohol and tobacco products.
